The following comprehensive school health services are provided to students:

shs1

Annual Health Appraisals

Annual health appraisals are conducted to assess normal growth and development. Significant changes in growth and development patterns will be discussed with the student and/or parent. Annual blood pressure screening is conducted to identify students at risk for hypertension. Health counseling regarding nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle will be provided. Appropriate referrals to private physicians will be made when necessary.

Vision Screening

The vision screening program (N.J.S.A. 18A:40-1) is performed to screen for visual acuity, muscle balance, and color perception. Vision screenings will be done in preschool, kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th grade; and by referral as needed. Students identified as needing follow-up will be referred to their private medical doctor.

shs3

Hearing Screening

Hearing screenings will be done yearly from preschool through 3rd grade, and then in grade 7th grade by the school nurse. Referrals are provided to parents of all identified students requiring evaluation by a private medical doctor.

shs4

Scoliosis Screening

Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the spine most commonly detected during the adolescent growth period. NJ State Law requires that all students between the ages of 10-18 be examined every other year. This will be done during 5th and 7th grade by the school nurse. Any pupil shall be exempt from the examination upon receipt of written request from his or her parents/guardian. Students identified as needing follow-up will be referred to their private medical doctor.

shs5

Tuberculosis Screening

The N.J.A.C. 6:29-4.2 requires that only the Mantoux intradermal test be used to test students for tuberculosis. Students who transfer into BES during the current school year from a country identified by the Health Department will be required to provide current Mantoux documentation. A Mantoux test will be considered acceptable only if it was administered within the previous six months.
